Sustainability has been a hot topic for years now so I wanted to share 5 simple and affordable ways that I have made my house greener without breaking the bank. When I created this list I had two things in mind: affordability and accessibility. I wanted these to be things that anyone could do, whether you rent or own your home and if you have a large space to work with or you’re living the tiny house lifestyle.

Choose Natural Cleaning Products

When I first started transitioning to a more sustainable lifestyle the first thing I changed was my cleaning products! I never knew how harmful big brand cleaners were but as soon as I found out I made the switch to all natural products! You can find so many recipes online to make your own or buy from companies that use non-toxic ingredients and sustainable busniess practices! I like to DIY most of my cleaning products, but if that’s not for you there are a ton of “green” brands that you can shop from in stores and online.

Decorate with Houseplants

The next thing I started doing was adding house plants! What better way to freshen up your house and add some life to a room than some houseplants?? There are plants that purify the air so you can say “bye-bye” to expensive air purifiers that rack up your electric bill and ”hello” to some beautiful new plant babies! What’s even better, they’re pretty to look at and can really pull together a room. No green thumb? No problem! Here are some of my favorite indoor plants that are practically indestructible and help filter the air.

Aloe Vera- Not only does this plant purify the air, but the gel inside can also be used for scrapes, burns, bug bites and much more.

Spider Plant- This is one of this easiest house plants to care for, they’re non-toxic and edible which makes them safe for kids and pets.

Rubber Plant- The biggest of my four selections, the rubber plant can grow up to 10 feet tall!

Snake Plant- This is an excellent plant for the bedroom because, unlike other plants that emit carbon dioxide at night, these continue producing oxygen.

Start a Garden

Something else that goes along with having houseplants is starting your own garden. You can easily plant your own vegetables and herbs in pots if you are limited on space or if you are lucky enough to have the space, you can find a nice sunny spot in your yard to start your garden. There is something so satisfying about eating food from your own garden. It is so fresh and tasty!

Recycle

One thing that a lot of people overlook and it is so easy to implement into your life is recycling and composting. You can set yourself up for success by putting seperate bins next to your trash so you have no excuse not to recycle! Composting is more difficult, but with a little research you can pick it up quickly. You can then use the fertilizer from composting to feed your plants!

Shop Smart

Shop sustainable home decor! You can find so many amazing green brands online nowadays! One of my favorite Sustainability-conscious brands is Mapiful! Mapiful is an online based company that sells custom prints. They have so many different options to choose from and whats even cooler is that you can completely customize each print! Not only are they great for decorating your home, but they also make amazing gifts that can be cherished for a lifetime! You can shop their prints here and use code ”MAPILOVE” to get 10% off your order!

Ultimately, there are so many different ways that you can make your home more sustainable, these are just a few of my favorite ways that you can start making a difference today!
